Paleozoic Era – Start and Evolution of Life
Section Introduction
- The first lifeforms of 3 billion years ago was similar to bacteria, consisting of simple cells. This ancient sea life called Cyanobacteria was the first bacteria to use chlorophyll and light to synthesize carbon dioxide and make oxygen. As the oxygen created by the cyanophta filled the oceans, other lifeforms that lived in the oxygen-less environment quickly adjusted to this change and rapidly evolved into other lifeforms.
- The Paleozoic Era started with the Cambrian Period, which is marked by the appearance of the trilobite, which had hard shells, followed by the Ordovician Period, Silurian Period, Devonian Period, Carboniferous period, and then the Era ended with the mass extinction in the Permian Period.
